Loss of productivity and sick leave are becoming a huge factor in the workplace due to high levels of stress among employees. Stress related absenteeism costs employers $15 billion to $25 billion each year (Statistics Canada 2012). It is now the fastest-growing category of disability insurance claims in Canada.
How can yoga help? Employees need time to relax, and manage stress and yoga is calming and good for de-stressing. When employees feel calm productivity is up and health care costs are down.
In my classes I teach yoga postures that will help with the physical strain of working at a desk for long hours. Long hours at a desk can contribute to tightness in the hips, legs, neck and back often causing pain and discomfort. I also focus on deep breathing and relaxation exercises that will help employees become more focused and less anxious. Each class has a short meditation/mindfulness practice to help with calming and reducing anxiety. Employees that are more relaxed will be more productive and take less time of work.
Some fortune 500 companies currently offering yoga to employees: Nike, HBO, Forbes, and Apple. These consider yoga important enough to offer classes as a regular employee benefit.
